We see Jesus' definition and perspective of Evangelism from the writing of Luke, in chapter 4 and verse 18 to 20. The Scripture that Jesus read in the synagogue that day was taken from the book of Prophet Isaiah chapter 61. Jesus' Evangelism is the same as the Holy Spirit Evangelism according to what that Scripture says. Simply put this Evangelism is described rather than defined. We can say it is all encompassing Evangelism. Jesus says true Evangelism is therefore, bringing the good news to the poor; binding up the broken-hearted; proclaiming liberty to the captive; opening the prison to those who are bound; proclaiming the acceptable year of the Lord; proclaiming the day of vengeance of the Lord; granting to mourners in Zion [that is Church] beauty for ashes; giving those who mourn gladness and garment of praise instead of faint spirit; bringing people to experience the righteousness of the Lord; and making people's life glorifying God in all facets.
In Matthew 28 and verses 18 to 20, Jesus gives us the evangelistic mandate that the Holy Spirit received for the Church from Jesus. We call this the Great Commission. In it, we see, 1) The purposes of Evangelism- "go and make disciples of all nations"; 2) The power for Evangelism-the power and authority of Jesus - "all authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me"; 3) The promise of his divine presence for the Church-"and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age".
After Jesus had gone to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to his Church, He [The Holy Spirit] has taken over the evangelistic work of Jesus. Undoubtedly, the Holy Spirit uses people of God; nevertheless, he does his work supremely alone without having to depend on man for whatever he is doing. He is God at work. We should count it a great privilege and honor if he ever calls upon us to do one thing or the other in the evangelistic ministry. He can do it without any of us. Here we shall now see how the Holy Spirit does [his] Evangelism.
